Utilizing the Chop-Saw to create a small pencil holder
Having the ability to utilize any woodworking tools is vital when prototyping with carpentry materials. In this guide, you will be introduced to one of these tools, a chop saw. You will be led through a step-by-step process of cutting square pieces of wood to create a small pencil holder.

 The first step is to mark a 2-inch line on the wood. |  The next is to do the same making a mark 3 inches for the length. |  Your final face for your box should look something like this. |  The next step is to ensure that the area around the chop saw is clean and that the saw is connected to power. |  Place your hand not on the trigger but just the handle then proceed to bring the inactive blade down to check if it is aligned with your lines. |  Once you're sure of your cut let the saw rest back at the top, pull the trigger, and proceed to allow the saw to meet max speed then slowly bring it down until it cuts all the way through. Important keep your hand on the trigger and let it slowly rise to the top before releasing the trigger. |  Repeat this step until you have a total of 5 rectangular faces each being 2 inches and 3-inch diameters. |  now carefully dabb drops of wood glue onto each side then proceed to either hold them together or place them in a stable position so they may dry. |  after the box is left in a stable position for about 20 - 30 minutes if you have not already you can begin to place the front and back faces. Then allow them to dry. |  At the end of this activity you should have a fully functioning miniature box. |
Safety
- Do not forget that in the woodworking space wear PPE. In this case, safety glasses are a must. They will shield your eyes just in case of flying debris.
- Please make sure to have your hands clear from the direction of the chop saw when you cut. Do not allow your hands or fingers to be within 6 inches of the blade while it is running.
- Do not cut pieces shorter than 8 inches
- Do not wear loose clothing and be aware of any hanging jewelry.
- Be aware of the blade, do not cut if the blade seems to be dull. Instead, inform a lab assistant and remember if in doubt ask! It's always okay to ask if you're unsure.
- When proceding to cut let the saw reach max speed before performing the cut. In addition, please ensure that the material you're cutting is held firmly in place.
Tips
- Keep your workspace clean and avoid any unnecessary clutter.
- Before committing to any cut without holding down the button to initiate the blade. Press the chop saw down to see if it is aligned with your cut.
- Before reaching for the newly cut piece ensure the chop saw is off and left in its starting position.
