Cutting Wood With Table Saw
Cutting wood with a table saw makes life a lot easier, but it can also be dangerous of you do not know how to do it. In this example you will learn make a wooden small box using a table saw.
| Type | Name | Description |
| Materials | Wood | Wood used to make box |
| Materials | Wood Glue | Wood glue to hold the box together when assembled |
| Tools | Pencil | Make marks showing where you need to cut the wood |
| Tools | Eye Protection | To keep dust and chunks of wood out of eyes |
| Tools | Ear Protection | Keep ears safe from noise |
| Tools | Tape Measure | Measure the exact distance |
| Tools | Speed square | Draw straight lines at the marked spot |
| Tools | Table Saw | Will cut the wood straight |
| Tools | Pushey | Keep fingers safe as cutting wood that's narrow |
| Tools | Sled | Will cut smaller pieces of wood safely on the table saw |
| Tools | Corner Clamps | Hold the wood to dry at directly 90 degrees |
Safety:
Never stand between the level? and the blade as wood can shoot out
Have the saw blade be at the above the wood by about one centimeter
Push the sled all the way through so you can see the blade
Push the wood all the way through so you can see the blade
Keep your body up right (keeping body away from saw blade)
Make sure the wheels are locked so the table can't move
Make sure that the nut is all the way tight on the blade depth control wheel
Measure and mark 4 inches on your piece of wood using a tape measure and speed square. | Open the rip fence by pulling the red lever up and slide it to four inches away from the saw blade. | Under the table there is a wheel with a nut in the middle of it. Unscrew the nut and turn the wheel to change the blade depth. |
Turn the wheel to be about one centimeter above the wood. Make sure to tighten the bolt again before continuing on. | Once you are ready to cut flip the switch on and wait until it is solid green and not red and green flashing. This just turns on the power to the table. | Be sure that your wood is flat against the rip fence away from the blade. Pull the big red stop switch towards you and the blade will turn on. Slowly move your piece through the saw all the way until the wood is fully cut. Then press the big red button to stop the blade. |
Once you have your long piece of wood, mark 2 4.5“x4” and 2 10“x4”. | Then get the sled and slide it onto the table saw. It will sit in the grooves so it should only move forwards and backwards, not side to side. Next pull the sled all the way towards you, put the wood on top and readjust the blade height (revisit previous steps in necessary). | Line up the marks perpendicular to the slice in the sled. Lining this up well is important otherwise your cuts will not be exactly what you wanted. |
Turn on the saw and hold the sled with your palms starting on the side with the start button and hold the sled down firmly with your figures out of the way, but still holding down the wood. Run the wood through until you can see the blade all the way through the sled. Keep your body and face away from the blade! | Repeat so you have all four pieces you measured and marked. Next you are going to cut a thin piece of plywood (1/8“) into a 4 3/4” x 10“ rectangle (this will be your base of your box). | Take the sled off the table and move the rip fence to be about 1/2” of the blade and lower it so that the blade is half the thickness of the plywood. |

Move the rip fence over 1/8 of an inch until and run the wood through again. Run the wood through until the piece of plywood can easily slide in, but make sure there is not too much wiggle room. | Run the all the wood through until you get the groves that fit the plywood well. Should take about two times. | Once the wood is all cut, put the wood in corner clamps lining up the grooves perfectly. Have two corner clamps so you can glue two sides separately. Use wood glue to glue it together. |
Once the glue is dried slide the thin plywood into the grooves and seal up the box using more glue. Then you have your box! | Final Box! | |
Tips:
Be sure to wear clothes that will not fall into the blade
Being aware of where you line up the wood relative to the sled. Try to be consistent to make sure the cuts are even.
Plan out your measurements before you cut so that you make sure you have the correct cuts
An easy way to turn off the saw is to hit the off button with your knee
Be sure to push the wood from behind and apply slight pressure to the side to make sure it cuts straight
With super prescience cuts be sure to calculate the blade width into your measurements
